Located on the verge of the Indian Ocean on the island of Java and near the island of Christmas, Gunung Kidul is a regency of the special territory of Yogyakarta, a region of Indonesia. A large part of this territory is composed of mountains, hence its name which means "the southern mountains" in Javanese, the language spoken in this part of the country.
